Emma Cosgray Gooding (Mrs. John), 84, formerly of Enterprise, WV died Wednesday morning, January 14, 2004 in the Rolling Meadows Nursing Home in Waynesburg, PA.
Mrs. Gooding taught generations of fourth grade students at Enterprise Elementary during the 1940's, 50's & 60's.Mr. & Mrs. Gooding made their home with Mr. Gooding's mother, Hazel Robinson, until her death at which time they relocated to 3508 Old Mill Road, Weston, (Jackson's Mill Community) where she lived at the time of her death.
Mrs. Gooding was born March 12, 1917 at Knob Fork (Wetzel County) WV. the daughter of the late W. Baker & Rosa Moore Cosgray.
Until she reached the eighth grade she attended a one room school in the area where she had both of her brothers Pat and Paul as teachers.She graduated from Hundred High School in 1935.Mrs. Gooding was a graduate of Fairmont State College and had done graduate work at West Virginia University.
On October 8, 1938 Emma Cosgray married John E. Gooding who preceded her in death on October 3, 2003.
Mrs. Gooding is survived by one brother, Paul R. Cosgray of Charleston, WV.Three sisters-in-law, Claudia R. Cosgray (Mrs. D. Clair) of Oakland, MD, Annette R. Ferrell of Charleston, and June L Gooding of Weston.Additional survivors include the following nieces and nephews: Patricia Cosgray Spangler of Hundred, Barbara Cosgray Moore, Janet Cosgray, and Jack D. Cosgray all of Waynesburg, PA, Annette Cosgray Yost of Stafford Springs, CT, Gehrig Cosgray of Clarksville, MD, Joyce Cosgray Vontz of Mt. Airy, MD, Barbara Ann Whitaker of Mobile, Al, William W. Ferrell, II of Los Angeles, CA, Robert Ferrell of Charleston, Daniel Gooding of Lewisburg, and Diana Gooding or Orlando, WV.
In addition to her husband, John, and her parents she is preceded in death by her brothers, Pat, Glenn, and Clair.
Mrs. Gooding was a contributing member of the St. James Methodist Church of Enterprise, a life member of the Shinnston Chapter 103 Order of Eastern Star and had belonged to various professional organizations.Mr. & Mrs. Gooding were avid motor home enthusiasts and had traveled extensively.However, she was first and foremost the matriarchal leader of her family and was greatly cherished by her brothers, and most expecially, by her nieces and nephews to whom she gave greatly through the years of her time, love, and guidance.
Inurnment will take place on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at the Bridgeport Cemetery at 11:00 AM with the Rev.
