James William “Junior/June/Jim/Bill” Ponzoo

June Ponzoo, 71, of Spraggs, PA, passed silently in his sleep on Monday, June 15, at the Waynesburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with diabetes and heart disease.

He was born on January 15, 1949, in Spraggs, PA, son of the late Charles Dewy Ponzoo and Gaynelle Phillips.

June was a Vietnam War veteran where he earned several service medals. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1976, he served as a correctional officer at the Pittsburgh State Correctional Institution for many years. He was an avid reader and collector. He was a good educator and especially enjoyed telling tales of old to anyone who would sit and listen.

Left to cherish his memory, are his daughters Angelique Ponzoo and Susan Ponzoo-Lasri; grandson Tarik Lasri; brother Charles “Chuck” Ponzoo; sisters: Joanne Haring, Carole Keller, Jane Stewart; and several nieces and nephews. June will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

 A grave-side memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 2, starting at 10:30am at the Blacksville Cemetery in Spraggs, PA.  Memorial service is being entrusted to Owen-Neely Funeral Home of 2 Washington Street, Blacksville, WV 26521. You may call the funeral home at 304-432-8204 if directions are needed.

Due to the current global pandemic, in lieu of attending the memorial service in person, please say a private little prayer for June’s peaceful passage and safe journey to his next adventure.

If you do wish to attend the service in person, please observe CDC’s social distancing and face mask recommendations for everyone's safety.

I went through basic training with Jim at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was a good friend and I feel grief for his family.
