Russell Core, Jr., 88, Buckeye Road, Core, WV died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at his residence.

He was born June 19, 1921 at Wadestown, WV, a son of the late Russell H. Core and Hazel Rice Core.

Mr. Core was retired from Pennzoil where he had worked for more than 32 years. He last worked as a terminal manager.

He was a member of the Mt. Morris Senior Center, the Buckeye United Methodist Church, and the James T. Maxon American Legion Post #992 of Mt. Morris, PA. He was a graduate of Wadestown High School in 1939.

Mr. Core served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II in North Africa and Italy. He flew 50 missions in a B-24 Bomber with the 375th Bomb Group as a flight engineer and nose gunner. He served from 1942 to 1945.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Bessie Smith Core; one son, David A. Core, of Core; one granddaughter, Rachel Core of Willow Grove, PA; one daughter, Nola Wilson of Hobbs, NM; four brothers, Norman Core, of Wadestown, Jimmie K. Core of Hundred, John D. Core of Wana, and Charles Core of Grafton; and three sisters, Maxine Myers Shriver of Wadestown, Mary Stottlemyre of Warren, Ohio, and Patricia Shrout Furey of Erie, PA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Max Core, and one sister, Ruby Herr.

Friends may call at the Owen-Neely Funeral Home in Blacksville from 7-9 PM Monday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday with the Rev. John Morrison officiating. Interment will follow in the Wadestown Cemetery where the James T. Maxon American Legion Post #992 of Mt. Morris will accord full military honors.
